Shopping for a King Futon: A Guide

By

Finding a king futon is a part of the college tradition. When young people head out for the first time to live on their own, they need furniture that is functional without requiring a lot of space or being especially heavy. College futons help students and other single people make do with dorm rooms and studio apartments. They can turn a bedroom setting into a living room and vice-versa with just a few adjustments.

Dorm futons of all sizes are perfect for this lifestyle because they are easy to move in and out of temporary locations. There are a lot of manufacturers that excel at producing this kind of bedding but each of them specializes in their own custom version of a futon. Be prepared to spend some time deciding which style of futon is right for you when you go off on your own.

Shopping for a Futon: King Size

You will get the most satisfaction out of king futon if you remember to keep a few things in mind:

Cost – A king futon should not cost as much as a regular bed of the same size and quality. Sometimes a king size futon will cost more than beds, but they make up for it with their versatility and their quality.

Design – Some futons are disguised couches and others are much more obviously beds. Some have thin cushions for the occasional nap and others contain soft, downy mattresses meant for regular sleeping. Review all the possibilities in design and find the one that will work in the living space that you are organizing. If you are planning to use the futon as a bed, make sure that you can sleep on it comfortably.

Material – Ask yourself what kind of college furniture you are going to have in your dorm room. A wooden frame for your college futon may seem classy or it may seem out of place depending on the environment that surrounds it. The choice of a futon is not made by itself. You will have to integrate this furnishing with all the others that will adorn your living space.

Color- This is just as critical as material. Pick a dorm futon that will fit in with the rest of your belongings. Black is a good choice as it fits into most all decor and hides stains and dirt well.

Accessories -  There are additional and innovative approaches to lounge furnishing. An ottoman adds a unique appearance and functionality to your futon. Do not overlook the other furniture that they sell to further decorate a futon room.

Size – Measure the dimensions of the room where you will place the futon. These beds are meant to be convenient, not to clutter your room. Remember to leave space for all the other furnishings and personal belongings that will surround your futon.

Quality – Though they are naturally lightweight, a futon has to be able to handle the burden of a person’s weight day-in and day-out. Make sure that you purchase a king futon that will last for a long time. If you end up moving into a bigger space and getting a bed, you can always keep the futon as a sofa and a spare bed for friends.
